Gregg Conly for Eastern Knots

"After graduating from Philadelphia College of Textile and Science, I began to learn the trade of designing hand-woven carpets in Tibetan tradition. I then traveled to both Nepal as well as Pakistan to broaden my understanding of the process and work with  local designers and craftsperson to see the manifestation of my work.. The experience was not only a opportunity of a lifetime for a designer, it was a eye-opener to the richness of a culture and the economy half a world which today can be brought into our western world through an object such as a rug. The tradition of Westerners bringing their designs to the East and having them produced to bring back home in a such a great example of the beauty in the reality of our global economy. It's one I would like to see continue to flourish, and a one which I would like to contribute to.

Ten years later after I began designing carpets, I was given the opportunity to be an artist in residency program in Costa Rica.  I then created this line of carpets out of Nepal with Eastern Knots on refection of my work completed in one of the most bio diverse places on earth.  Costa Rica not only has an abundance of floral and fauna but is rustic and contains 11 different microclimates. I lived in a home made of bamboo, and saw things I never knew existed. I'm very happy that I've been given the opportunity to translate some of my life experiences into a craft I love, hand-knotted carpets."
